Abi Wason

Abi Wason was born in Winchester, UK, in 1978. Having grown up with artistic parents, Abi's childhood was heavily influenced by her fathers interest in conceptual art and philosophy alongside her mother's love of watercolour. She went on to obtain a 1st Class B.A Hons degree in Media & Visual Arts and an M.A. in Contemporary Visual Arts from Falmouth College of Arts, UK, before forging a career as a Broadcast Journalist for the BBC for thirteen years.
The pandemic gave Abi the opportunity to finally return to her love of painting, making it her sole occupation from 2022. She was chosen by Saatchi Art to feature in their ‘New This Week Collection’ in early 2024, and has since exhibited at Dalloz Contemporary, Clapham, London; Tom Cox Gallery in Crystal Palace, London; 17 Midland Road Gallery, Bristol; Penwith Gallery, St Ives and Newlyn Art Gallery, Penzance. She has also featured in International Magazine for Emerging Artists, Suboart Magazine and Curatory Magazine. Her paintings have been been sold to collectors worldwide and she is currently represented by Devon based, curator and art dealer, Emily Hadley @emuplops and by Dalloz Contemporary in Clapham, London. |
Artists statement"Each painting tells a thousand untold tales. Tales that I can only tell through colours, shapes and the twists and turns of mark-making. I feel I'm always in search of something 'other-worldly', something that goes beyond the tangible process of brush meeting canvas. A place beyond language. A place of raw emotion, intuition and sensation. Something ethereal and ungraspable. The pieces I create are, in essence, my words - and my connection to the world.
I seek to take the viewer on an explorative and imaginative journey. Rather like those smells on the wind that transport us back to a moment in time, a place once travelled or a loved one that’s no longer with us, I like to think they may evoke in the viewer an opportunity to connect with some of their own forgotten memories or cherished untold tales. Undeniably I am heavily influenced by the rugged, west Cornish coast where I live and feel that my paintings echo elements of the shifting light, the meeting of land and sea and the symbiosis between the calm and chaotic weather patterns." |
